|Slice of Life, Sci-Fi, Fantasy||Aria is a three part anime. The first part introduces the characters, the second introduces the world. Gorgeous art work, and well-thought out. Mostly an episodic series. It is recommended to start on Aria the Animation. You won't be disappointed.|
|Action, Super Powers, Steampunk||Yasuhiro Imagawa's homage to mangaka Mitsuteru Yokoyama's career. In the retro-future, the world's energy needs are solved by the invention of the Shizuma drive; a non polluting and reusable energy source. In the shadows of this new era of prosperity, the organization Big Fire works towards its objective of world domination. The only people who can oppose them are an elite interpol known as the Experts of Justice, along with the boy, Daisaku Kusama, and his partner, the mightiest robot of them all, Giant Robo.
Giant Robo is a tale of deceit and sacrifice. As the plot develops, the lines between good and evil become blurred; culminating with perhaps the most ironic ending in all anime. Contrary to the name, there are very few actual fights between giant robots. The focus is instead placed on the characters and their wide verity of super powers. A must watch for any fan of classic anime and manga.
|Action, Supernatural||Baccano is an anime thats set place in America during the 1930's. If you like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, you should definitely check this out. The music in this show is the best part.|
|Action, Horror||Despite most of the manga focusing on demons and the supernatural, 90% of this anime is set within a low fantasy setting. Big on politcs and military warfare of the early 1000s. If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, this show is not to be overlooked. However, if you do decide to watch this show, don't expect much for an ending.|
|Sci-Fi/Western||I think it's time we blow this scene, get everybody and the stuff together... Ok
|Sci-fi, Mystery||In a town where computers and reality are integrated as one, Yūko Okonogi joins her grandmother's "investigation agency" comprised of children equipped with virtual tools, and crosses paths with expert hacker Yūko Amasawa as they relentlessly seeks to unlock the mystery of computer viruses that emerge from inaccessible corrupted spaces around the town.|
|Comedy||Led by phallus-waiving terrorist-from-hell Johannes Krauser II (guitar/vocals,) and given pulsing, throbbing life by indestructible drummer Camus and bassist Alexander Jagi, Detroit Metal City is the hottest ticket on the concert circuit! There's just one catch. That "hottest ticket" is just a meal ticket, and beneath the makeup, these ultimate head-bangers are hired doppelgangers who don't even LIKE what they do! Jaggi is actually Wada, who wants to play glam rock; Camus is Nishida, an anime fan with an appalling weakness for curry and NSFW videos; and Krauser is... oh the shame... street-singing Soichi Negishi, whose dreams of singing happy pop hits seem hopelessly doomed by the success of his rage-fueled alter ego! Worse, he can't even tell anyone who Krauser is. Not even the girl he likes, who HATES DMC! Will rage against the corporate machine consume Negishi's tortured soul? Is there life after death metal? What it's like to put your head in a jet engine and turn up the volume?

|Sci-Fi||The future, probably Japan. Robots have long been put into practical use, and androids have just come into use.|
Influenced by the Robot Ethics Committee, it's become common sense for people to treat androids like household appliances. Their appearance - indistinguishable from humans except for the ring over each android's head - has led some people to empathize unnecessarily with androids. Known as "android-holics", such people have become a social problem.

|Comedy||Life isn't easy in feudal Japan… especially since the aliens landed and conquered everything! Oh sure, the new health care is great, but the public ban on the use of swords has left a lot of defeated samurai with a difficult decision to make concerning their future career paths! This is especially true if, as in the case of Gintoki Sakata, they're not particularly inclined towards holding a day job, which is why Gintoki's opted for the freelance route, taking any job that's offered to him as long as the financial remuneration sounds right. Unfortunately, in a brave new world filled with stray bug-eyed monsters, upwardly mobile Yakuza and overly ambitious E.T. entrepreneurs, those jobs usually don't pay as well as they should for the pain, suffering and indignities endured!|

Most people say to hold in there for the first 20-25 episodes, so keep that in mind.
|Comedy||Eikichi Onizuka, an ex-gang leader and still virgin, takes it upon himself to become the greatest teacher ever, only to end up teaching children at a middle school. Once murdered by his friend, Brandon Heat comes back 13 years later to get revenge on a criminal underworld that lead to his friend's betrayal. Don't let yourself be fooled by its first episode which is very misleading and doesn't represent what it has to offer!
In fact, don't even watch the first episode. It spoils almost the entire story. You're better off starting at episode 2.

Some of those lists may contain manga recommendations, deal with it.
(Please don't post older versions of those lists, I had a hard time sorting them out.)
Here's a template.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yp0WSOgKwtGOY-V0K9hLaHP8mwuW697nAJRLjLeS2TQ/edit?usp=sharing This is a spreadsheet of anime worth watching/manga worth reading. It's a combination of rec charts and anime that I personally found to be worth watching, or found to be culturally significant in some way. They are all sorted by year and have with them the number of episodes/volumes (numbers may be outdated for ongoing series). This is a work in progress (especially on the manga section, which I'm not as knowledgeable on) and relies pretty obviously on opinion, so don't expect this to be the ultimate source of everything worth watching/reading. If you think something should be here that isn't, make a comment on the spreadsheet and maybe I'll check it out.
